Welcome to the Website of Flitwick Cricket Club, and to all visitors toThe Hardy Vale - home of 'The Mighty Otters'
Flitwick Cricket Club is a large, Clubmark Accredited, "Focus Club", in central Bedfordshire with over 60 adult playing members and one of the largest youth sections in the County.
On Saturdays, in 2014 we will enter three teams in the Saracens Hertfordshire Cricket League, with all three teams achieving their highest ever finish in 2013. The first team are now the highest ranked of any Bedfordshire club, having secured a place in the inaugural Hertfordshire Championship. The second team will begin life in Division 5 following the League restructure, and our third team secured a third successive promotion in 2013, and will now play in Division 10.
On Sundays, in 2014 we will again field three senior teams in the Bedfordshire County Cricket League, where the club has in the past shown its innovative approach by pioneering the wearing of our own coloured kit. The 1st XI were County Champions in both 2010 and 2012, but will be looking to improve on a less successful 2013. A young 2nd XI will look to further consolidate in Division 2 following a creditable fourth place in 2013, and the third eleven will compete in Division 5. In addition the club will continue to stretch their youngsters via the Development Division, aimed specifically at Under 17 development, with the support of some adults.
In 2013, the club won the prestigious Heritage Cup for a second successive season, and for the fifth time overall, by defeating Potton Town in the final. The Butcher Shield was also won with a victory over Eaton Socon, and the first playing of the Bryan Waller Trophy was another victorious day as Northamptonshire Premier League team, Brixworth were beaten in the annual challenge match, in memory of Bryn.
We once again lead the way in the facilities marks for 2013 in both the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Leagues, a true testament to the fantastic facilities at The Hardy Vale. The awarding of a grant by Sport England as part of the Olympic Legacy funding in April 2012 has enhanced facilities further, making The Hardy Vale an "Inspired Facility part of Places People Play".
In the winter months, the club participates in the Bedfordshire Indoor Cricket League, with games taking place on Sunday mornings at The Bunyan Centre in Bedford. The first team won the County title in 2010 as well as 2005 & 2006. As Bedfordshire representatives in the 2011 ECB National Championships, The Otters progressed to the National Semi Finals at Lord's. The second team were deserved winners of Division 2 in the 2012/13 winter, and have been promoted to the top Division for the current winter; and we have a third team who will compete in Division 3, played at Bedford College.
The earliest records of cricket being played in Flitwick date back to 1833. Details of some matches from 1867, 1904-6 and 1914 can be found on this site. The current club was reformed in 1950, following a twelve season absence due to the Second World War, and has flourished ever since. Every available scorecard with match and individual detail, covering over 5,700 matches from the present day back to the 1950 season can be located within the "matches/results" section of the website, with the ongoing aspiration of locating those scorebooks/matches that remain missing. A number of our established club members are currently collating information to write a book on the history of Flitwick Cricket Club.
2008 saw the 30th anniversary of the acquisition of our magnificent ground, The Vale (pictured above). The first match following the move from Flitwick Recreation Ground, was played on 18th April 1981. The 30th anniversary of the first competitive match versus Dunstable Town was recognised in April 2011. In October 2013, the ground was renamed The Hardy Vale, in honour and recognition of Mick Hardy, for his outstanding service to the club over seven decades.
We run a very large and successful colts section with TWO league teams at age groups under 10 and under 12, and one team at both under 14 and under 16, as well as dedicated training to girls aimed at encouraging their participation in our great game, through a new ladies & girls section. We hope to continue to see a large number of our current colts progress into senior cricket in forthcoming years.
